One shared alphabet: stems, branches and the 60-year cycle
BaZi, Zi Wei Dou Shu, the almanac and most Liu Yao methods all read time through the same alphabet: ten Heavenly Stems crossed with twelve Earthly Branches, producing 60 pairs. Years, months, days and hours are labelled with these pairs, which is why a Chinese date is never just a number.
Five Phases describe behaviour, not material
Wu Xing (Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water) is best read as five modes of change — growth, peak, transition, contraction and storage. Reading them as literal substances is the most common beginner error, and it is what makes "you are missing Metal, so wear white" style advice meaningless.
BaZi: the Day Master and the Ten Gods
BaZi converts a birth moment into four stem-branch pairs. The day stem, called the Day Master, represents the subject; every other character is then described by how it relates to that stem, producing the Ten Gods — Officer, Seven Killings, Wealth, Resource, Output and Companion among them. Ten Gods describe relationship dynamics, not good or bad fortune.
Useful God is not "the missing element"
Strength is judged from the month branch (whether the Day Master is in seasonal command), from roots in the branches, and from stems that support or drain it — not by counting how many times an element appears. The "Useful God" is the phase that best balances the whole chart; it can even be an element the chart already has plenty of.
Zi Wei Dou Shu reads domain by domain
Instead of reducing a life to one structure, Zi Wei places roughly a hundred stars into twelve palaces — Life, Siblings, Spouse, Children, Wealth, Health, Travel, Friends, Career, Property, Blessing and Parents — so career and marriage questions are read in different places. Many practitioners keep BaZi for overall texture and Zi Wei for specifics.
Divination answers a question; destiny reads a life
Liu Yao (six coin tosses) and Mei Hua Yi Shu produce a hexagram for one specific question, and changing lines describe how the situation moves toward its outcome. BaZi and Zi Wei describe a life pattern instead. Mixing the two is why people ask a natal chart "should I take this job" and get a vague answer.
Observation traditions: face, palm and Kan Yu
Face reading and palmistry catalogue visible features against recorded tendencies; Kan Yu (Feng Shui) reads landform, water and orientation. All three are observational traditions built on recorded cases. They can be studied seriously, but they are not measurement science and should never override structural, medical or legal assessment.
How to tell a practitioner from a fraud
Honest practice states uncertainty, refuses medical, legal and financial claims, and never sells disaster removal. Warning signs are fear-based upselling ("your chart shows a serious hidden danger"), requests for large sums to resolve a curse, and promises of accuracy. No system on this site predicts specific events.

Frequently asked questions
Is BaZi the same thing as Zi Wei Dou Shu?
No. BaZi reduces a birth moment to four stem-branch pairs and reads the whole chart as one interacting structure. Zi Wei Dou Shu distributes about a hundred stars across twelve palaces and reads each life area separately. They answer different kinds of questions and frequently disagree in emphasis.
Do I need to know my exact birth hour?
The hour matters most, since it determines the hour pillar. If it is unknown, the chart can still be built from the year, month and day pillars, and some tools offer an unknown-hour mode that infers candidates from major life events. Treat hour-sensitive conclusions as provisional.
What is true solar time, and when does it matter?
Clock time is a civil convention; the sun is actually overhead at different moments across a timezone. Correcting birth time by longitude can shift the hour pillar for people born near a two-hour boundary, which changes the whole reading. It matters most for births close to the edges of a double-hour.
My chart is "missing" an element — is that bad?
No. A missing element is a description, not a diagnosis. What matters is whether the chart flows: the Useful God may be an element the chart already contains. Advice to "supplement" a missing element is the single most common commercial upsell in this field.
Are these systems scientifically validated?
No. They are coherent symbolic frameworks preserved over centuries, useful for cultural study and structured reflection. They do not make testable predictions, and they are not a substitute for medical, legal, financial or safety judgement.
