Chinese Divination: Choosing the Right Method
Most disappointing readings come from asking the wrong system. This English guide explains what each major method is built to answer, the workflow behind a serious consultation, and the boundaries an honest practitioner keeps.
These are models, not oracles
Classical Chinese systems were built as structured ways to reason about timing, relationship and trade-off under uncertainty. Treating them as prediction engines is what produces both disappointment and the commercial exaggeration that gives the field a bad name.
Destiny systems versus divination systems
BaZi and Zi Wei Dou Shu describe a life pattern from a birth moment — they are "destiny" systems. Liu Yao, Mei Hua Yi Shu and Qi Men Dun Jia produce a reading for one specific question at one specific moment — they are "divination". Knowing which family you need is the first decision.
The five-step workflow
A serious consultation follows a stable path: clarify the real question, build the chart or hexagram, interpret structure against classical rules, state what is uncertain, then record the reasoning so it can be reviewed later. The last two steps are what separate practice from performance.
Picking a method by question type
Long-horizon questions about temperament, career shape or life phases suit BaZi or Zi Wei. A single decision with a deadline — should I sign, should I wait — suits Liu Yao or Mei Hua. Timing and direction questions are where Qi Men is traditionally used.
Boundaries that protect you
A reading should not be used for medical diagnosis, legal strategy, investment decisions or safety. It also should not be used to override your own judgement on relationships. If a practitioner asks for money to remove a misfortune they described, that is the exit signal.

Frequently asked questions
Which method should I use for a yes-or-no decision?
Use a divination method — Liu Yao or Mei Hua Yi Shu — because they are built for a single question with a timeframe. Natal charts such as BaZi describe tendencies over a life and will only give you a fuzzy answer to a binary question.
Is Qi Men Dun Jia more accurate than BaZi?
Neither is "more accurate" in a measurable sense. Qi Men is designed for choosing timing and direction in a specific situation; BaZi is designed for describing a life pattern. Accuracy claims that compare them are usually marketing.
How many times should I ask the same question?
Once. Repeating a divination until you get the answer you wanted undermines the method and your own judgement. Write down the first reading and review it after the outcome instead.
Can divination replace professional advice?
No. Not for medical, legal, financial, engineering or safety matters. A reading can help you articulate what you already know and what you are avoiding, which is a different and more honest job.
What should a legitimate consultation cost?
